The Panda Cavy: Black, White, and Bold
The Panda Cavy is one of New Zealand’s most striking and beloved unique pedigree breeds. Known for its dramatic "black, white, and bold" appearance, the Panda’s true hallmark is the sharp, mesmerizing contrast between its snow-white coat and its deeply pigmented skin. Unlike common white guinea pigs, this unique genetic makeup creates a breath-taking optical effect on the show bench, where the solid black skin peeks through the pristine white coat at the points, giving the breed its signature exotic look.
The Panda is a truly homegrown treasure. It was created over 36 years ago in the Manawatu region by renowned New Zealand cavy judge Christa Krey of Lessentine Cavy Stud. The foundation stock for the breed originally came from Victoria University in Wellington. What began as a scientific genetic line was carefully transformed through decades of dedicated, selective breeding into a highly stabilized, premium show-quality breed that remains a proud symbol of Kiwi cavy innovation.
Today, this rare Kiwi Panda breed is fiercely protected and championed by the Independent Cavy Clubs of New Zealand. As a true crown jewel of homegrown genetics, this remarkably striking variety relies entirely on independent networks for its survival and official exhibition. Without their passionate advocacy and strict breed standards, the distinct, high-contrast blueprint of the beautiful Pandal could easily be lost to history.
