Black, White, and Bold Unique Breed
The Panda is a unique homegrown heritage breed with a rich scientific legacy. Developed 35 years ago in the Manawatu region by respected New Zealand cavy judge Christa Krey of Lessentine Cavy Stud, the breed's foundation stock originally originated from genetic research lines at Victoria University of Wellington. Through decades of meticulous selective breeding, this scientific lineage was carefully refined into a highly stabilized, show-quality breed that remains a proud milestone in Kiwi cavy genetics.
Today, this rare variety is officially preserved and championed under the guidance of the Independent Cavy Clubs. As a significant asset to local breed heritage, the Panda relies entirely on independent breeding networks for its survival, development, and official exhibition. Without strict breed standards and dedicated preservation efforts, the high-contrast genetic blueprint of this exceptional variety risks being lost to history.
The Contrast & Standard
The Panda Cavy is one of New Zealand’s most striking and beloved unique pedigree breeds. Known for its dramatic appearance, the Panda’s true hallmark is the sharp, mesmerizing contrast between its snow-white coat and its deeply pigmented skin. Unlike common white guinea pigs, this unique genetic makeup creates a breathtaking optical effect on the show bench, where the solid black skin peeks through the pristine white coat at the points, giving the breed its signature exotic look.
Our Conservation Mission
Maintaining the distinct, high-contrast definition between the white coat and deeply pigmented skin remains a precise genetic challenge. Without targeted, selective breeding, these signature characteristics can easily diminish over successive generations.
