Kiwi Guinea Pig Breeders Developing Iconic NZ Cavy Breeds
For over 50 years, Kiwi breeders have been developing top quality cavy breeds, like the Iconic New Zealand Plume or the newest breed Tweed. Only Independent Cavy Clubs across New Zealand continue to treat Kiwi pedigree breeds as equals with the imported pedigree breeds.
We aren't just a club; we are a community of preservationists. Our goal is to ensure that the future generations can experience the beauty of our historical and unique Kiwi breeds and celebrate the New Zealand cavy fancy achievements. After the tragic loss of our NZ Bonnet breed, we've made it our primary mission to provide the education, mentorship and exhibition support needed to help our NZ breeds thrive in New Zealand.
In recent years, some misconceptions have grown within the New Zealand cavy fancy that a breed must be recognized overseas to be considered "real." This ignores decades of successful breed development, and the remarkable, unique pedigree breeds created right here in New Zealand. We believe local innovation should be celebrated and encouraged, not discouraged.
Another common myth is that breeds created through cross-breeding are somehow invalid. In reality, most "purebred" animals in existence today started as a cross. Through generations of careful breeding and meticulous refinement, genetics naturally "lock in." At that point, the animals form a true-breeding line, not a cross.
It is fascinating to see how global crossbreeding and mutations has produced iconic breeds like the Swiss, Minipli, Alpaca, Skinny and Ridgeback, to name a few. These international breeds are rightfully celebrated, which is why New Zealand's unique homegrown breeds should never be treated as inferior. They deserve the exact same respect.
New Zealand Unique and Rare Guinea Pigs club is proud to support the guardians of the fancy, who preserve our heritage lines and develop New Zealand's next generation of incredible cavy breeds.
