The Shared History of the New Zealand Peruvian and New Zealand Plume
The New Zealand Peruvianand the New Zealand Plumeare inseparable twins of the Kiwi cavy fancy, sharing the exact same foundation history. Their remarkable journey from casual backyard pets to recognized pedigree treasures is a testament to the resilience of local breeders and the unique origins of our domestic hobby.
Establishing the First Wellington Bloodlines
The story begins back in the 1950s, when a passionate woman migrated from England to Wellington, New Zealand, bringing her treasured English Peruvian and Abyssinian guinea pigs with her. At that time, organized cavy shows and clubs simply did not exist in New Zealand. To keep her hobby alive, she mixed-mated her long-haired and rough-coated cavies, selling the offspring locally as beloved family pets.
Years later, renowned judge and breeder Christa Kreywas searching for a pet for her nine-year-old son when she discovered this Wellington breeder. Captivated by the unique appearance of these animals—which boasted thick, dense coats and more than the standard two rosettes—Christa recognized their immense potential and purchased several foundation lines for herself.
1976: The Dawn of the Kiwi Cavy Fancy
In January 1976, an inaugural meeting was held in Wellington to establish New Zealand’s very first cavy club. The response was overwhelming; over 70 enthusiastic people attended, bringing along their prized guinea pigs. The vast majority of the animals brought to that historic meeting were of the distinct New Zealand Plume and New Zealand Peruvian type.
While a massive wave of public interest emerged for exhibiting these animals, actual pedigree imports from the United Kingdom and Europe were exceptionally rare and difficult to secure. Recognizing the quality of the animals already thriving in local homes, the committee of what is now known as the New Zealand Cavy Clubtook a pioneering step. They meticulously drew up formal pedigree show standards for two entirely new, homegrown breeds: the New Zealand Plumeand the New Zealand Peruvian.
By establishing these official guidelines, the club gave members a concrete blueprint to selectively breed, refine, and produce showable pedigree guinea pigs. These two iconic Kiwi breeds filled a massive genetic and structural need, effectively launching the foundation of the modern New Zealand cavy fancy.
Celebrating 50 Years of Kiwi Peruvian Heritage
Today, our two original unique breeds have reached an extraordinary milestone: they are now 50 years old!
We invite you to stand alongside us and join Independent Cavy Clubs across the country in celebrating this golden anniversary.
The New Zealand Plume and New Zealand Peruvian have survived incredibly challenging times—including modern club exclusions and the pressures of overseas breed bias in recent years. Yet, our homegrown New Zealand breeds remain ambitious, resilient, and deeply cherished. They represent the true pioneer spirit of New Zealand's pedigree history.
